United State's Citizens Banned from Adopting Russian Orphans
Dec 29th 2012, 23:29

Yesterday, Friday, December 28, 2012, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the Dima Yakovlev Bill into law. The new law will go into effect on January 1, 2013. Those in the middle of the adoption process need to email the Department of State at AskCI@state.gov and provide information regarding where you are in the adoption process, using the subject line "Intercountry adoption in Russia - family update." If you have already emailed this information - you do not need to email again.

The Department of State is still working on this situation with the Russian government on how to best help families already adopting a child.

New Anti-Magnitsky Act a Possible Problem for Russian Adoptions
Dec 26th 2012, 22:53

If you are thinking about adopting from Russia or you are currently involved in a Russian adoption, please take a moment and check out the newest information and adoption alert on the Department of State's website.

It seems that Russia is not very happy with The Magnitsky Act that was signed into law by President Obama on December 14. This law keeps Russian officials that are believed to have been a part of the abuse and human rights violations of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky from entering the United States. Russia feels that the United States is meddling in their affairs and creating problems between the two countries.

Russia has since responded with their own bill named after a child that died at the hands of American adoptive parents Miles and Carol Harrison. The Dima Yakovlev bill will ban US citizens from adopting Russian orphans.

The Department of State wants pre-adoptive parents to know that they are working with Russian officials and have yet to hear of a halt or ban on Russian adoptions. The Department of State does want those in the process of adopting a Russian child to email AskCI@state.gov to provide information regarding where they are in the adoption process, using the subject line "Intercountry adoption in Russia - family update."

One of My Favorite Holiday Traditions - Watching 'A Home for the Holidays' on CBS
Dec 19th 2012, 00:13

This year marks the 14th annual A Home for the Holidays where foster care adoption is celebrated with stories from adoptive families, children looking for an adoptive home, and celebrities sharing musical numbers. It's a show I look forward to watching every year - usually with a wad of tissues.  Rachel Crow, Melissa Etheridge, Rascal Flatts and other entertainers are a part of this year's show. The special, sponsored by Wendy's, airs today - Wednesday, December 19, at 8:00 p.m. EST on CBS.

A Home for the Holidays is presented with the help from the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and the Children's Action Network.

Wendy's is also encouraging consumers to "tweet it" to "treat it" back to this important cause. For every tweet using #TreatItFwd until December 21, Wendy's will donate 50¢ to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption™ (DTFA).  DTFA is a non-profit organization that was established in 1992 by Wendy's founder Dave Thomas, who was adopted.  Wendy's will donate up to $25,000 to the Foundation in support of Wendy's Wonderful Kids, the signature program of DTFA that focuses on moving America's longest-waiting children in foster care into adoptive families.

So "tweet if forward" and look for A Home for the Holidays tonight, Wednesday, December 19, on CBS at 8 EST.
