Would Have Been Tragic if Winehouse Was Approved to Adopt
Aug 3rd 2011, 00:54

There has been a lot of buzz on whether or not famous singer Amy Winehouse, who was found dead in her London home July 23, was set to adopt a 10-year-old child from St. Lucia. The child, Dannika Augustine, and her grandmother supposedly had both confirmed the story to The Sunday Mirror, but reps of Winehouse have reported that there is no truth to the story.

I would have to say with the singer's very public battle with drugs and alcohol and her award winning song, "Rehab" where she made it clear that she wasn't going to "go, go, go" - I have to worry about any adoption agency that would sign off on such an adoption home study.

I know we have discussed before that it seems like celebrities get a break when it comes to adoption, but would a celebrity with such an obvious problem be able to gain approval to adopt? I hope not. Someone mentioned that Winehouse would have remained sober for the child if she would have adopted. Adoptive parents can not hope or plan that the child they bring into their home will help fix their problems - personal, marital, emotional, or psychological. That's not the point of adoption. It's not fair to the child.

Winehouse had battled her addiction to drugs and alcohol for years, her latest stay in rehab was just this past May. Cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
