Today was my daughter's second day of high school. The first day was for Freshman orientation. It's hard to believe how fast she is growing up. But we try to keep with our family traditions for the first day of school - new outfit and pictures. Of course this year she seemed very irritated with the pictures. No cute poses this year. She's 14 after all.
As you're preparing to send the kids off to school this month or early next, take a moment to take pictures to share with birth families in a foster or open adoption. The first day of school is a special moment for most families. And remember to check back here for ideas on how to mentor birth families in a foster care situation during parent-teacher meetings or conferences.
I also have a tradition when it comes to enrolling new foster children into school, especially if the child is placed in our home and school is already in full swing.
