In case you haven't heard, Penn State's beloved head football coach, Joe Paterno was fired a few days ago along with the university president Graham Spanier. It seems that ten years ago, Assistant Coach Mike McQueary saw a 10-year-old boy allegedly being raped by Jerry Sandusky, another assistant coach, in a locker room shower. McQueary, then a graduate assistant, reported the incident to head coach, Joe Paterno. The coach told his superior, the university's athletic director and the man in charge of Penn State's campus police. The university president Graham Spanier was also informed. But that is where the reporting stopped, no one ever called the authorities.� The number of victims that Sandusky is being charged with abusing continues to grow. Reports state that Sandusky allegedly met the children through a charity he founded, The Second Mile.
Now students are rioting over the loss of coach Paterno.� I'm not fully understanding why so many seem to be rioting over the fact that Paterno was fired. Why aren't people rioting over children being victimized? These men had a legal and moral obligation to keep children safe. They are mandatory reporters of child abuse and neglect, yet - nothing was done to protect innocent children.
Is football really that important?
Reading the news accounts of McQueary hearing sex-like, slapping noises coming from the shower, truly makes me gag. I'm sure McQueary was shocked, but he could have done more after he saw this boy being abused.
The Education Department is investigating to see if the university complied with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, named for a freshman that was raped and murdered in 1986.
