Birth and Adoption:

Born in London on March 3, 1961. She was abandoned in an apartment by her birth mother, left to be found by neighbors after three or four days of crying. She spent the next several years living in children's homes and suffering horrifying visits with her birth family. These visits included severe child abuse, including sexual abuse.

She started throwing the javelin when she was 11 years old. At the age of 14 she was adopted by her javelin coach, Margaret Whitbread.

Olympic Record:

Representing the United Kingdom, she competed in three Olympics. She won the bronze medal for javelin in 1984, in Los Angeles, and in 1988, the silver in China.

Fun Facts:

  • She is half Turkish and Greek.
  • Earned World Champion in 1987, in Rome
  • 1987 BBC Sports Personality Of The Year.

What is she doing now?:

She retired in 1992 and now lives in Shenfield, Essex with her son. Her ex-husband died in 2007.
