Biographer Sally Jacobs, a Boston Globe reporter, states that she has found documents that show that President Obama's parents considered placing him for adoption. In a new book about President Obama's father, "The Other Barack, The Bold and Reckless Life of President Obama's Father", which comes out next week, Jacobs cites documents that state that Barack Obama Sr. spoke with immigration officials that his new wife, Ann Dunham, was making plans with the Salvation Army to "give the baby away."
Ms. Jacobs also interviewed the former White House press secretary, Robert Gibbs, who shared that the president did not know anything about this supposed adoption plan before Ms. Jacobs inquiry into documents she obtained thanks to the Freedom of Information Act. Gibbs also stated that President Obama does not believe that his mother ever considered adoption for him. Some believe that it may be that Barack Obama Sr. may have been telling the immigration officials what he thought they wanted to hear so he could remain in the country as he was attending the University of Hawaii at the time.
I found this adoption news story to be very interesting. I have no idea if President Obama's mother ever truly considered adoption for him before his 1961, birth. But if she did, I wonder what helped her make the decision to parent? I wonder how President Obama's life story would have changed if she had chosen adoption.
